An audiovisual long-duration artwork by Balthasar FreitagIn Lumar, Balthasar Freitag constructs an expansive and immersive body of work that unfolds across dimensions of space, time, and medium. Comprising 64 visual compositions, the project presents an abstract, organic cosmos, evoking celestial systems, alien terrains, and microscopic life forms. At the center of each piece lies a luminous structure — sometimes circular, sometimes amorphous — that appears to emerge from the surrounding darkness, as if illuminated from within.These visual forms are at once minimalist and archaic, yet rich in depth and motion. They oscillate between digital precision and organic unpredictability. The resulting animations transform each image into a dynamic landscape of light and shadow, topographical rise and fall, like observing the surface of an undiscovered celestial body. The works evoke craters, ridges, and tectonic undulations, offering a tactile interplay between abstraction and imagined reality.Each of the 64 animations spans precisely 30 seconds and is accompanied by a slowly unfolding musical composition: a 32-minute soundscape woven from fragments of Freitag’s personal sonic journey over the past two decades. Memory, texture, melody, and raw emotion coalesce into an auditory diary — not narratively linear, but atmospherically layered.Unfolding over a period of 256 days, a new segment is revealed every four days. In this deliberate rhythm, image, animation, and sound enter into intimate dialogue. Only over time does the full scope of the work come into focus — inviting viewers to pause, observe, and lose themselves in space and time. At the culmination of this cycle, the entire soundscape is released as a standalone piece.

The title Lumar synthesizes the two conceptual poles of the project: Lunar, invoking the mystical, the spherical, the unseen behind the visible; and Luma, a technical term referring to brightness, forming the basis of the visual transformations. Each piece is a cosmic landscape unto itself, where chaos meets harmony. Organic shapes and fluid lines dance in natural, yet meticulously guided motion, suggesting a harmony of chaos and order, light and shadow.
